Site Description
Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum, which overlooks Charleston Harbor, is best known for its centerpiece historical attraction - the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. Named for the American victory that ended the Revolutionary War, the USS Yorktown was engaged in numerous campaigns in the Pacific Theater of World War II, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. The carrier was recommissioned in 1950, served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and was a recovery ship for the Apollo 8 astronauts. The ship also had a prominent role in the motion picture Tora, Tora, Tora, which depicted the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum also includes the World War II destroyer USS Laffey, which was engaged both at D-Day in the 1944 Allied invasion of France and at the 1945 battle of Okinawa in the Pacific, and the American submarine USS Clamagore. The submarine was one of the earliest submarines deployed during the Cold War era that followed World War II and was based at nearby Charleston Naval Base. Patriots Point is also home to 25 American military aircraft and the U.S. Medal of Honor Museum which honors recipients of America's highest military honor.
