Site Description
Huntington Beach State Park is a picturesque, oceanside state park with a historic home built in the 1930s by the developers of adjacent Brookgreen Gardens. The park features a pristine beach, campgrounds, picnic areas and a nature center - all operated by the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
Access and Admission
Once the seaside portion of a sprawling 19th century rice plantation, Atalaya and Huntington Beach State Park were acquired by railroad tycoon Archer M. Huntington and his wife Anna Hyatt Huntington, a renowned sculptress, in the early 20th century, when Northern business leaders were purchasing local plantations as retreats and hunting preserves. The Huntingtons built Atyalaya as a Moorish-style oceanside home in the 1930s and developed adjacent Brookgreen Gardens to showcase Anna Huntington's sculptures. In 1960, the state of South Carolina acquired Huntington Beach State Park which features a pristine stretch of beach, a 2,500-square-foot nature center, a campground, picnic areas, hiking and bike trails, educational programs, nature tours, and a renowned annual arts festival at Atalaya, now a National Historic Landmark.
