Set on a preserved natural stretch of beachfront, Huntington Beach State Park was formerly part of several Waccamaw Neck rice plantations. Today, it features a pristine beach, campgrounds, picnic areas and a nature center - all operated by the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

An ancient pre-Columbian Native-American historic site, the Sewee Shell Mound is accessed by a hiking trail in Francis Marion National Forest. Visitors may begin their tour at the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center, located at 5821 U.S. 17 North, in the town of Awendaw.

Located on Black Mingo Creek in Williamsburg County, this site is a major stop on the Francis Marion Trail. Here, Brigadier General Francis Marion defeated a larger force of Loyalist militia during the Revolutionary War in the style of guerrilla warfare that made him famous as the "Swamp Fox of the Revolution".

Located on the state line adjacent to South Carolina's historic Little River Inlet, Bird Island is a North Carolina Coastal Reserve site famed for its birdlife, coastal vegetation and loggerhead turtles. Access is available by foot and boat.

Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens is a restored plantation from the Colonial and Antebellum periods of South Carolina history. Although the manor house is modern, the brick slave cottages date from the time when Boone Hall was a working rice plantation.

Established on the site of four 18th century rice plantations, Brookgreen Gardens is renowned for its Old South charm and natural beauty - and as the largest outdoor sculpture garden in North American.

A farm museum featuring a 19th century farmhouse and related structures, the Browntown Museum depicts period life on a small farm in the Pee Dee Region.

Historic Bull Island and the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge offer a unique combination of South Carolina history and natural history. Bull Island was frequented by the pirates of the Colonial Era, by British sailors in the Revolution, and Northern troops in the Civil War. Ferry transportation and tours may be arranged through Refuge headquarters.

Designed by the architect of the Washington Monument, the historic Conway City Hall building was built in 1825 as the Horry County Courthouse. Today, it is the central landmark for the historic river town of Conway which is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. The picturesque Conway Riverwalk enables visitors to stroll alongside one of South Carolina's most scenic black-water rivers.

Site of a major Civil War prison camp, the Florence Stockade Trail and Memorial Park is adjacent to Florence National Cemetery, which began as a cemetery for Northern prisoners-of-war who died at Florence Stockade. The National Cemetery's original facility contains the graves of more than 2,800 Northern soldiers, and the nearby Florence Stockade Trail and Memorial Park provides historic displays and a walking path through the site of the Civil War prison.

The historic site where the American Civil War began, Fort Sumter is located on a small island in Charleston harbor and may be reached only by boat (the map link is for the ferry from the Charleston waterfront). Nearby Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island is part of Fort Sumter National Historic Monument and is the Revolutionary War site where South Carolina earned its name as the Palmetto State.

The Francis Marion National Forest is located north of Charleston, South Carolina. It is named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion who was known to the British as the "Swamp Fox".

A 40-acre living history center, Freewoods Farms is a restoration of the typical small farm operated by African-American families in South Carolina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One of the region's earliest ferry-crossing sites, Galivants Ferry features a collection of historic structures from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also the site of the Galivants Ferry Stump Meeting, a Democrat Party political event that began with the 1876 election of former Confederate General Wade Hampton.

The third-oldest city in South Carolina, Georgetown is rich in history and culture, and offers visitors a wide variety of historic attractions from the Colonial Era to the present.

A 2,725-acre preserve and wildlife area, the Great Pee Dee River Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area preserves a seven-mile stretch of the historic Great Pee Dee River in its natural state. It is managed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
